Carolina Horse and Hound
De-Skunk Your Dog
Skunk spray is an oil-based solution composed primarily of thiols and thioacetates.
Thiols are the ones that smell so bad.
Both are sulfur-based.  The stabilized chlorine dioxide (Oxygene) in Oxyfresh products oxidize sulfur-based compounds.
Thiols are eliminated immediately when the stabilized chlorine dioxide comes in contact with them.
Thioacetates are  eliminated immediately UNLESS water (or anything containing water) is present at the time of the spraying or any
time before applying the stabilized chlorine dioxide . If any amount of water is present, the thioacetates will convert to thiols.

Oil-based skunk spray will quickly travel down your pet's hair into the follicles. This may also occur if enough time elapses between the
skunk spraying and application of the shampoo and deodorizer. It takes time for the oil to work its way back to the skin surface. Warm
water will help, but you should lengthen the waiting period between applications in order to catch all of the converting thioacetates in
cases such as these.
Steps to get rid of the skunk odor.

Oxyfresh products are completely safe and non-toxic, recommended by thousands of pet professionals worldwide!

1. Mist your pet's hair coat with Oxyfresh Pet Deodorizer until totally damp all the way down to the skin surface. Rub well into coat down
to the skin. Apply generously.  The coat should feel damp.

2. Leave the Pet Deodorizer on hair and coat for 10 minutes.
Do not rinse or apply water or anything with water in it before applying the
shampoo (step 4).

3. Rub Pet Gel on the teeth and gums. Many times the pet has an open mouth when it gets sprayed. You may want to rub the gel onto the
head and face area as well, being careful not to get any into your pet's eyes (it won't hurt them, but it's uncomfortable). Leave this on for
10 minutes.

4. Bathe the pet with our Pet Shampoo (and water). Apply the shampoo in spots all over your pet's coat and work into a thick lather. Let
the shampoo remain on your pet for 10 minutes. Each 10-minute application time is important! It gives  the stabilized chlorine dioxide
the opportunity to neutralize the volatile sulphur compounds.

5. Mist the Pet Deodorizer up the animal's nose so it gets into the sinus cavities. They might not like it, but it is important.  Chances are
there is skunk spray inside the sinus cavity.

6. Finally, rinse well with warm water. It's best to leave your pet damp so that all of the thioacetates are allowed to convert.  Make sure
your pet is in a warm, comfortable place; if they get chilly, hair follicles will tighten up and make it more difficult for the oils to come to the
skin surface. Wait 2 hours (or 5 to 6 hours if your pet has suffered a straight on hit) and repeat steps 1 to 6. There will be no more skunk
smell even if your pet gets wet!

One treatment is typically sufficient to eliminate the skunk odor in most cases, by repeating the steps, you can be certain to get rid of the
odor.
